This guide is for LMS admins installing the CourseKata application into a class (as opposed to installing the application instance-wide) on the Blackboard Learn learning management system.

\uD83D\uDCD8 Prerequisites

To follow this guide, you will need

  • An instructor account at CourseKata. If you do not have one, you can request one (free) at our website. Make sure to mention that you are an LMS admin, and use your institutional email address.

  • Permissions to install external LTI tools into your LMS.

If you are using domain blocking, you may also want to add domains used in our content to your allow list.

 \uD83D\uDCD8 How CourseKata Works

CourseKata content is built and hosted on our servers and delivered via <iframe> over the LTI protocol to your Learning Management System (LMS). To make this work, you will need to install both the CourseKata application as an external LTI tool, as well as the content as modules in your course. This document will start by explaining how to install the tool—both at the overall LMS level and at the course level—and then how to get the course content linked up with your class.

We support both the LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3 protocols, though we recommend that you use 1.3 wherever possible.

 🛠️ Registering the Tool

Registering your Platform on CourseKata

  1. Start by logging into CourseKata. You will need an instructor account in order to complete this process, so if you do not have one, you will need to request one.

  2. After you have logged in, go to our platform registration page.

  3. If your institution’s platform is listed with the LTI 1.3 configuration marked as complete (indicated by a green “Ready” label), congratulations! It appears the setup has already been successfully completed on your platform.

  1. If Everything is correct just jump up to Importing Content . If not, please continue with this guide.

  2. While on coursekata.org/platforms, click the "Register Platform" button and complete the form with your desired information, ensuring you use "https://blackboard.com " as the Origin URL. Remember to choose BlackBoard Learn as the LMS.

  1. Click on Register Platform and you will see two IMS LTI configuration options, select IMS LTI 1.3:

To proceed, register your application to make it available on CourseKata platforms. If you don’t already have an account on the Blackboard Developer Site create one there. The following steps will guide you through the process.

  1. You’ll now see the setup instructions for configuring the LTI 1.3 connection on your platform. Simply follow each step, and when complete, click Save.

  1. If everything is set up correctly, you’ll see a green label indicating the LTI 1.3 is ready, like this:

Registering CourseKata on your LMS

Now that the LTI 1.3 connection between Blackboard and CourseKata is established correctly, you can proceed registering this provider on your LMS. (Remember, go to your LMS Instance not to Blackboard Developer Portal).

  1. Navigate to the System Admin, in the main menu at the right top corner.

  1. Choose LTI Tool Providers from the Integrations section

  1. Select Register LTI 1.3/Advantage Tool

  1. In the Client ID field, input the Application ID provided by your application on Anthology’s Developer Site. The information should load automatically after you click the submit button.

  1. If you want to make this tool available to all users at your institution without approval by admins, change Tool Status to Approved.

  1. Under Institution Policies → User Fields to Send, check the boxes for Role in Course, Name, and Email Address.

  1. Remember to click Submit to save your configuration.

Configuring the course

📘 Importing Content

🎉 CourseKata is now installed and ready for your instructors to use. From here, you can test that the installation is working properly by creating a test course. This is the same process that an instructor would follow to create their course.

  1. From the menu on the top right of CourseKata, choose My Classes under Teaching.

  2. Click the New Class button and choose New Class

A Continuation Class is something an instructor might use if their course is split over two academic periods and as a result they need to reinstall the same course into a new LMS class.

  1. Fill out the form with your institution’s information, and make sure to mark that This is a test class (real instructors will choose real class) but this helps us categorize cleanups. If you are unsure of which book, you can just choose our flagship College / Statistics and Data Science (ABC), though it doesn’t really matter which you choose. When you are done, click Create Class.

  1. You will now see the setup wizard. Since we have different instances of the Blackboard LMS, the domain may vary. To help the wizard identify Blackboard, you should paste the issuer URL here. The issuer is typically https://blackboard.com. Simply paste it and click on NEXT STEP.

  1. Download the Cartridge and lets continue with the creation of a Blackboard LMS Class. To download the cartridge just click here:

  1. As an Admin, go to Blackboard LMS → System Admin, search for the Courses section and click into Courses.

  1. Now, click on Create CourseNew, fill in the course information, and then click Submit. (The remaining details can be adjusted based on the instructor's needs.)

  1. You will see a label confirming that the class was created successfully, and you can now search for it. You can search it by name or even ID.

  1. To enter the class click on the COURSE ID link.

  1. Inside your class, go to the left toolbar and search for Packages and Utilities and then click Import Package/View Logs.

  1. Click in Import Package button. And then search for SELECT A PACKAGE section and then click on Browse Local Files button and select the cartridge for your class.

  1. Click on Select All to select the completed content provided by the cartridge. And the Submit, if everything is ok, you will be able to see a pair of messages telling you that the cartridge was imported successfully.

  1. Go to the left toolbar, click on the name of the book you’ve chosen for this class, and then select one of the modules. (Note: Refresh the page if the book and its modules don't appear.)

  1. Finally, enter the module content, and you will see an iframe prompting you to select a class. Click the SELECT CLASS button, and wait for a message indicating that the page needs to be reloaded. Once you see the message, refresh the page.

🎉 The content should now be properly imported and recognized! Head to your Modules section again and choose one of the CourseKata modules. When you access the module, you should see the Course Content properly.
